Are my daughter's symptoms linked? - A question from Facebook user

  • 3
Hi, my daughter is 18. She developed a major rash in her underarms, about 1 1/2 to 2 years back. After heavy steroid cream use, it settled down. Now she uses a cream to keep it at bay. If she stops, the rash comes back. While we were treating this, she developed major stomach issues and total loss of appetite. If she drinks half a glass of water, she feels full to the top and cannot eat for hours. Each time she eats, she forces herself. Many tests have been done. After the appetite issue, she started suffering from major anxiety and sleeplessness. Maybe there is a connection between all of this? She was given prozac, which she had for a couple of months and it did nothing for her. Can you please help in any way? Anxiously look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks.

Is it possible for your daughter to develop aneroxia nervosa? It is an eating disorder characterized by an abnormally low body weight, an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted perception of weight. People with anorexia place a high value on controlling their weight and shape, using extreme efforts that tend to significantly interfere with their lives. Moreover, patients with anorexia nervosa also tend to have concomitant depression or anxiety disorders.

HI Craig,
Many thanks for your response.
She does suffer from anxiety, but not anorexia. She wants to eat and finds it very debilitating that she cannot. I know that it can be a subconscious this, but i assure you it's not.
She is on cbd oil now, but will be going back to prozac, as it doesn't seem to be affecting her the way we hoped it would. Also, her underarms are flaring with it.She uses emulsifying ointment BP for her underarms. We tried homeopathy and her underarms flared like crazy. had to go down the steroid path to get it back under control.
She's had a gastroscopy, sonography, urine, stool tests and all her bloods have been clear. We are doing blood tests again ad will sen you the results.
Many thanks once again.

Hi, can you indicate whether there were abnormal results among her tests and what tests specifically has she done? Did she take endoscopy examination for her appetite problems? If they have connections and the rash can be treated by the cortisone, you'd better go through the autoantibodies tests, which are helpful for autoimmune disease diagnosis. The anxiety and sleeplessness can be a mental pressure about her health problems rather than part of the disorder itself. I think your daughter can go to see a dermatologist to check the rash first and then go to see a rheumatologist for possible rheumatic disease.

Many thanks for your response, Marie.
We have been to a dermatologist and came out with nothing.
