Home Remedies for A Summer Cold

  • 0

A summer cold is simply a common cold people catch during summertime. It is not as common as the winter cold, but people may feel worse when having it. People who have a summer cold have to suffer not only the symptoms but also the hot weather: no ice creams, no cold drinks, and no resorts.

No medication can kill the viruses that cause a summer cold. People have to rely on the immune system to fight off it. However, home remedies can help with the symptoms and make you feel better.

Before getting to home remedies, let us understand the summer cold firstly.

Causes of the summer cold

More than 200 different types of viruses can cause colds. Unlike the winter cold that is caused by the rhinovirus, a summer cold is usually caused by another type of virus known as the Enterovirus. Enterovirus usually breaks out in summer because the virus thrives in warm weather.

Enterovirus is contagious. If people who have direct contact with a sick person or touched a contaminated surface, they can catch the virus.

Symptoms of the summer cold

Enteroviruses can cause the following symptoms, which are similar to those of a winter cold.

Cough

Sneezing

A runny nose

A sore throat

Slight body aches or a mild headache

But there is a difference. The winter cold does not always cause fevers, especially in adults, but a summer cold due to enterovirus may cause a sudden fever.

Home remedies

As mentioned in the begging, there is no medication that can be used to treat a summer cold. The main treatment for a summer cold is to treat the symptoms. It is important to know that antibiotics do not treat the cold. Treating colds with antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance. There are some home remedies that can help with those symptoms.

Firstly, stay hydrated. It is important to drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Avoid beverages that can dry you out, such as coffee and alcohol. Besides, hot beverages like tea could be soothing and beneficial.

Secondly, get plenty of rest. “It's amazing what a solid night's sleep can do to boost your immune system and kick that cold to the curb." Said Darria Long, MD, an ER physician at Northside Hospital in Tennessee. Any excessive activities that can stress the immune system should be avoided during the cold.

Thirdly, use a humidifier. A Humidifier cannot directly help you get rid of a summer cold. But using a humidifier can reduce air dryness and relieve symptoms such as runny noses, sore throats, and cough.

Finally, supply Vitamin C. Vitamin C can strengthen the immune system. The virus can be quickly eliminated if you have a strong immune system. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is helpful.

The more you take care of yourself and use these home remedies, the better you will feel when you catch a summer cold. However, if you develop more serious symptoms such as high fever, or the cold lasts longer than two weeks, please see a doctor as soon as possible.
