Danger in the night light – 60% increase in the risk of bowel cancer

  • 0

Walking outside at nighttime, what will you see if you look up?

Probably streetlights, shining in a dizzy yellow or white. Staring at them, your mind starts to drift away from the ground, until you can take a bird’s eye view of the earth.

What can you see now? It’s a dark marble shimmering with light that resembles a net woven by gold threads. It’s beautiful, isn’t it? But scientists suggest that something dangerous for your health is dormant, likely to wake up and attack anytime.

Danger in the night light map

Researchers from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health conducted a study involving 2,000 volunteers living in Barcelona and Madrid, night shift workers excluded. In the study, they used the night light map from the International Space Station to observe the nighttime exposure to the blue light in city lighting.

The results published in Epidemiology suggest that high exposure to artificial blue light contributes to a 60% increase in the risk of developing bowel cancer. The results reveal that 650 out of 2,000 volunteers were reported to have bowel cancer.

The study coordinator Dr. Manolis Kogevinas said that the energy of the blue light can suppress melatonin, a hormone that regulates the biological clock, after too much exposure. “Bowel cancer is associated with night shift work & circadian disruption,” he added.

Artificial blue light

Artificial blue light is made by electronic devices, digital screens, and fluorescent and LED lighting.

Therefore, televisions, computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets are all sources of artificial blue light. As the light has a very short wavelength, it produces a very high amount of energy.

Studies have revealed that, over time, exposure to the blue-spectrum light could cause serious long-term problems such as eye diseases, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and so on.

Bowel cancer

Bowel cancer occurs in the large bowel. It is also known as colon cancer, rectal cancer, or colorectal cancer. It is the third most common cancer diagnosed as well as the third deadliest cancer in the United States. But it can be cured if you spot the signs and symptoms early.

· Abdominal pain, discomfort or bloating

· Blood in the stool

· Unintended weight loss

· A persistent change in your normal toilet habits(like pooing more often)

· Fatigue

In some cases, bowel cancer can cause the bowel blocked, without digestive waste passed through. It is referred to as a bowel obstruction.

· Sudden or intense abdominal pain

· Feeling sick

· Constant swelling of the tummy

· Bloating

· Constipation

· Unintended weight loss

In an era where digital devices have become close friends who are always beside you, you might have forgotten the blue light emitted could be harmful. Maybe it’s time to think about what you should do to protect yourself from the damage of the possibly fatal light.
