Hi Lori, besides excessive muscle strain, swollen muscle knots may be caused by many different musculoskeletal disease such as myositis, bone problems, arthritis, or even malignancies. You have to check it by MRI and muscle biopsy if possible. Blood panel of autoantibodies for muscle diseases is also necessary. See a neurologist as well as a rheumatologist.
Fracture, soft tissue contusion, and muscle strain are common causes of muscle swelling and pain. In addition, myositis, osteosarcoma and other rare diseases may also cause muscle pain and discomfort. It is recommended that you have a CT or MRI scan of your upper extremities.
