Why do they perscribe doxycycline what is the preferred antibiotic for bronchitis/ pnuemonia amoxicillin?

Treatment of bronchitis is usually empiric, that is: largely based upon doctor’s experience. If the bronchitis is suspected to be caused by bacterial infections, use of medications such as amoxicillin or ciprofloxacin is considered.

Symptoms can be similar but the infected area is different. Doctors need to see the X-ray to differentiate. Experienced doctor can make a preliminary evaluation based on the sound.
