Hi my son in law was diagnosed with alcoholic hepatitis 3days ago. Is there any cure . How will he suffer? He is in the hospital he was throwing out blood from mouth and butt. He was confused until now he stabilized. I am concern will he be ok later?
Hey, your son-in-law has already had gastrointestinal bleeding, not only alcoholic hepatitis, but has entered the cirrhosis period. Complete recovery is impossible unless liver transplantation. However, after the illness is controlled, it is necessary to stop drinking, and the diet and medicine should be completely obeyed by the doctor.
Is there any cure?
It depends on the severity. In early stage, by avoiding alcohol and medication the damage to liver can be reversed in all or in part. In a late stage, the damage to the liver is permanent, medication may relieve the inflammation and improve the liver function, but the damage can't be reversed.
What defines early stage, symptoms, how do you know the difference between early stage and late stage?
Stage 1: fatty liver, may have no symptom, or feel tired or have discomfort in the upper right side of your abdomen Stage 2: alcoholic hepatitis, may have malnutrition, fatigue, fever, jaundice, right upper quadrant pain, tender hepatomegaly, and sometimes a hepatic bruit Stage 3: alcoholic cirrhosis, may have portal hypertension, often with esophageal varices and upper GI bleeding, splenomegaly, ascites, and portosystemic encephalopathy From an ultrasound image each stage is very characterized.
