Why can't I find anything on cutaneous lupus NOT systemic lupus. I want to know what is the treatment, what to do about continuous itching and will it ever go away??
Hi Ms. Wallace, common treatment include sunscreens, Corticosteroid, Prednisone, Antimalarial pills. There're various categories of Cutaneous Lupus, although sunscreen is common, the other medications don't work for every category.
Gabapentin has been a tremendous relief from prickly itching for my mother.

For cutaneous lupus, the most important method is sunlight protection, as sunlight is the most common trigger for an attack. Systemic or local treatment such as prednisone or other immunosuppressive drugs including but not limited to methotrexate, cyclosporine, azathioprine and myco-phenolate mefetil can be tried. All of these drugs have important side effects and should always be discussed with your physician prior to starting treatment.

Oral lesion is common with lupus, mostly as in ulcers. This requires a biopsy to confirm. An oral lesion linked to lupus may be caused by active disease, or drugs treating lupus. A biopsy will let you know if it's an active disease. Drugs that may lead to oral lesion incl. NSAIDs, COX2 inhibitor, antimalarial drugs, immunosuppressive drugsprednisone, rituxan.
