My cousin has this diagnosis, Myelofibrosis. It is in fibrotic stage. She is having her spleen out.
Will her polycythemia just continue as another problem?
What kind of prognosis?
Ms. Finkbeiner, I wish I could say something else, the truth is the prognosis of Myelofibrosis is bad. This disease, is a problem in the blood stem cells. Everybody needs blood cells, RBC, WBC... Normal blood stem cells replicate and divide into new healthy blood cells. In Myelofibrosis, the blood stem cells are mutated, are sick, these sick stem cells still replicate themselves and divide, into sick blood cells. As time goes by, there's no healthy blood cells in someone's body. The red blood cell is usually the first one to completely disappear. This progress, there's no way to reverse it. That's how cruel it is.
Hello, usually after the spleen is removed, the liver will increase rapidly. The disease usually has a survival period of 5 years after diagnosis. 20% of patients will develop into acute leukemia. Most people die because of severe anemia, heart failure, bleeding, and repeated infections.
