If the drug is not effective enough, surgery can be considered.
I totally understand and agree with you diagnosis. I tested positive for the virus that causes cold sores even though I never had an actual sore. Without going into more detail The virus that causes shingles is similar to the one that caused cold sores. I have had bouts of TN since I was 35 yrs old. I would have attacks for a couple years at a time then they would go away. Now 61 I haven’t had an attack for 3 yrs. I have always suspected the zoster virus as the reason for my TN.
iF ANYONE WANTS TO UNDERSTAND THE ILLNESS BETTER TEX ME TN ATYPICAL FACIAL PAIN...GLAD TO HELP I HAVE IT... DR, DON'T ALWAYS GO TO SOMEONE THAT HAS IT IT DOES AFFECT EVERYONE DIFFERENT EVEN THE MEDS, I TAKE NO MEDS FOR THIS ANYMORE  ty TONI GIRL

I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia
My life as I know it is over. I’m in unbearable pain. It takes over my life. Almost impossible to work, to want to live, plus I also have an uncontrollable Hashimoto thyroid disease. Lord help me.
I was diagnosed with it. Doctor is giving me steroids then carbomazepine. I don’t want the carbo medicine it has too many side effects. What should I take?
Doctors usually prescribe carbamazepine (Tegretol, Carbatrol, others) for trigeminal neuralgia, and it's been shown to be effective in treating the condition. Other anticonvulsant drugs that may be used to treat trigeminal neuralgia include oxcarbazepine (Trileptal), lamotrigine (Lamictal) and phenytoin (Dilantin, Phenytek). Other drugs, including clonazepam (Klonopin) and gabapentin (Neurontin, Gralise, others), also may be used.
Thank you!
