From symptoms, colds may lead to fever, allergies don't. Discharge from a runny nose in allergies is colorless, thin, in colds it could be yellow and thick. If it's allergy, when you stay in a different environment with no allergen, you may find the symptoms go away or improve greatly, this doesn't happen in a cold.
