I wash my hands very well all the time plus When I shower I wash my face. I moisturize my face because it gets dry, could the lotion get in the eye and cause this? And is it contagious?
Hello Roberta, the cause of Stye is usually a combination of a clogged oil gland and a certain type of bacteria. Your body is coated with billions of friendly bacteria that live right along with you. Most of the time there’s no problem. But when conditions are right, the bacteria overproduce and create a pimple. I can't say it's the moisturizer, but it's definitely no good when moisturizer goes into your eyes. Usually the stye is harmless, it's not contagious.
Hello. I just started wearing contacts about a week ago. I swam all day yesterday in saltwater as well as chlorine with my contacts in. Could this cause a stye to occur? How to i make this go away quickly I'm very scared
Hi Kylie, for the stye, just get some antibiotics eye drop from your doctor, it'll recover in a week. Yet, contact lens wearers should never use them when swimming, it causes infection, sometimes the infection can be very serious.
Hi, I’ve been getting a stye on the top lid of my right eye for the last 3-4 months now. In January I was sick with acute Cellulitis on both my lower limbs. And of course I’m diabetic also. (I wouldn’t have it no other way.. lol) Since it takes months for the Cellulitis to eventually heal, 1- Am I being over cautious due to my previous illness.? 2- Am I always going to get styes because of my previous illness.? 3- One thing has nothing to do with the other.? 4- Why are these styes keep on popping up.?
Hi Brian, stye has nothing to do with cellulitis, so don't worry. Stye isn't a big problem, its a type of infection. If it occurs frequently, consider getting antibiotic eye drops to cure it for good. Always wash your hands before touching your eyes. The only possible link is that when you have an infection here, it's more likely you carry the bacteria there.
Maybe the stye and cellulitis are from the same type of bacteria.
I get styes on the under side of my upper eyelid. Are they the same as regular styes? And do I treat them the same?
Yes, it means infection. You may get antibiotic eye drops and ointment for treatment. Don't use eye makeup until you're totally recovered. Plus, the under side of the upper eyelid, is where the eye line lies, right? In that case, check the shelf life of your eye liner and mascara.
What about for men as he does not wear eye makeup? My husband has had this now for about a month. He is not one to get to a doctor, but this red bump under his eyelid does not seem to be going away.
Stye certainly could happen in men. Wearing an eye makeup is a risk factor for stye, not the only cause. Usually it’s a combination of a clogged oil gland and a certain type of bacteria. Your body is coated with billions of friendly bacteria that live right along with you. Most of the time there’s no problem. But when conditions are right, the bacteria overproduce and create a pimple.

Most of the time you can treat a stye at home. Apply a warm compress to the affected eye for 10 to 15 minutes 2 to 4 times a day for several days. After applying the compress, use your finger to press on the inflamed bump to try to unplug the oil gland. Doing this can ease your pain and inflammation and help the stye go away faster.

Keep your eye closed while you use the compress. When the stye comes to a head, keep using the compresses to put pressure on it until it ruptures. Don’t squeeze it -- let it burst on its own. Some styes spread skin infections when they pop. If that happens, you’ll have to take antibiotics
I'm scheduled for knee replacement surgery. Will an infection like this cause issues during surgery???????
Usually, doctors will wait until a stye is cured.
