What is the treatment for low sodium levels?
Irvin Willingham
Mar 8, 2019
Hello, for acute hyponatremia, patients need IV sodium intravenous fluid immediately. For chronic asymptomatic patients, first find the cause and then treat the cause. For patients with chronic symptomatic hyponatremia, sodium supplementation is required and a loop diuretic is administered. Note that blood sodium should not be corrected too quickly.

I drink to much because of dry mouth. It causes low sodium. I was overnight in the hospital because of low sodium. How can I treat my problem at home if I don't lower fluid intake?

Hello Barbara, usually people don't get low blood sodium by drinking too much water. There is usually an underlying condition that caused it. I understand you've spent the night at hospital, did you get checked up and did the doctor rule out all the potential causes? If no, I'll recommend you to call a doctor and get some tests. If yes and there's no other cause to the low sodium condition, then you may choose to drink salt water sometimes.

Hello Karen, diabetes and hyponatremia are not linked. Before taking diabetic meds, you may consider taking keto diet, and try to walk for an hour a day to lower down the blood glucose.

I drink 1 L of Pedialyte a day is that too much sodium potassium zinc chloride levels per bottle are sodium 1380 MG potassium 780 MG zinc 7.8 MG and chloride 1770 MG per bottle 1liter

The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, but it's best to keep your intake below 1,500 milligrams, if possible.

Um, why do you drink Pedialyte every day? It's supposed for dehydrated people. Daily intake of sodium for average adult is limited to 2500 mg, you've taken 1380 mg from the drink, if you eat three meals a day, it's highly likely that you take too much sodium. People should get most of nutrients from natural foods.

My Dr called today and asked how I was feeling. I thought it unusual for her to call me at home on a Saturday then she asked me several questions. Are you vomiting, do you have muscle cramps etc and finally saying my NA level was 130. I have been a little weak and some other little things and she said if things get worse to go to an ER and get some fluids. Tonight my chest is achy is this too a side effect from the low level? Is there anything I can do at home before going and having to have an IV?

Abnormalities in sodium levels usually present in other ways not related to heart pain. If you feel chest pain, better go to ER for safe.
