Here’s what you can do at home when a gout attack starts to ease the pain of the attack and reduce the risk of others.
- Take medicine. If your doctor has given you medicine, take the medicine as directed.
- Use cold. Applying an ice pack to the painful joint may help ease pain and inflammation.
- Rest the joint. Rest it until the pain eases up. If possible, raise the joint on a pillow or other soft object.
- Drink plenty of water. When your body doesn’t have enough water, your uric acid levels rise even higher. Stay hydrated to help keep those levels normal.
- Create gout-friendly socks. Cut the big toe out of cheap socks or cut the toe section off completely so you can have warm feet without toe pain.
- Tame your sheets. Tuck the sheet in on the sides so its end falls at calf level, but free your painful toe.
- Watch what you eat and drink. Stop eating troublesome high-purine foods, such as some seafood, organ meats like liver, and fatty foods. Also avoid sweetened drinks and alcohol -- especially beer.
- Relax yourself. Stress can aggravate gout. Watch a movie, talk to a friend, read a book or listen to music.
