Women are much less likely to develop hemophilia than men.
Every male has one X chromosome. If the X chromosome is functional hemophilia X chromosome, the man develops hemophilia. On the contrary, every female cell has two X chromosomes, but only one is needed for survival. The other is inactivated. If both chromosomes contains functional hemophilia X chromosomes, then that cell will not produce any of the clotting factors. Therefore, women are more likely to be carriers instead of hemophiliacs. However, their male children is 50% likely to be hemophiliacs. Early tests are necessary for families who want to have babies.
If a woman is a carrier, the severity varies, depending on the particular defect inherited.
