The hemoglobin A1C test, measures the amount of sugar in your red blood cells and tells you the average of your blood sugar over a three-month period. Generally, higher A1c values means higher risk of diabetes. The following chart is a common reference:
A1c Level
What It Means
Less than 5.7%
Normal (minimal Risk for Type 2 Diabetes)
5.7% to 6.4%
“Prediabetes,” meaning at risk for developing type 2 diabetes
6.5% or greater
Diagnosed diabetes
Make sure you get a regular A1c test, especially if you think you might be at risk for diabetes. For example, if your A1c percentage is 7% or even 8%, ask for doctor’s help right now. Related FAQ:
