Low blood pressure usually means an unusually low blood pressure, possibly less than 90/60. You can compare this together with the normal range, which is less than 120/80. The major causes include dehydration, bleeding, inflammation, heart disease, medications and others. In healthy people, low blood pressure without any symptoms is not usually a concern and does not need to be treated. But it can be a sign of an underlying problem. For example, the elderly may have not enough blood flow to the heart, brain, and other vital organs.

Major cause of low blood pressure - dehydration, bleeding and inflammation

Dehydration is common among patients who often vomit, feel nauseated, have diarrhea or excessive exercise. You lose large amounts of water when vomiting and with diarrhea, especially if you don't drink enough fluids to replace the depleted water. This can lower your blood pressure. Bleeding can be a result of trauma, surgical complications, or ulcers, tumors, or diverticulosis. Severe inflammation of organs inside the body, such as pancreatitis, can also lead to lower blood pressure.

Major cause of low blood pressure: heart disease

A heart attack may weaken the heart muscles and reduce the amount of blood it pumps. Also, a slow heart rate can decrease the amount of blood pumped by the heart. Both of them can lower your blood pressure. Major cause of low blood pressure: medications

Medications such as calcium channel blockers, beta blockers, and digoxin (Lanoxin) can slow the rate at which the heart contracts. These include medications for high blood pressure, depression and some water pills. Alcohol and narcotics can also lower your blood pressure. • Pregnancy.
  • Diabetes.
  • Low blood sugar.
  • Loss of blood.
  • Allergic reaction.
  • Widening blood vessel.
  • Liver disease.
  • Deficiency in nutrition.
