Strep throat is caused by infection with Group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria. These bacterial organisms are often found in the throat or on the skin, and are responsible for other illnesses such as impetigo (a skin infection). However, some people may carry this bacteria in the throat or on the skin, but they don't show any signs or symptoms of disease.
As we know, both adults and children can get strep throat. The infection most commonly happens on children between 5 to 15 years of age. Strep throat most commonly occurs between late fall and early spring. It is more widespread during the school year when groups of students are confined within a limited space.
