What is arterial stenosis? Arteries transport oxygenated blood to different tissues and organs of the body. This is essential for metabolic activities and sustaining life functions. Any narrowing of an artery will hamper the flow of blood and depending on the extent of the narrowing, known as stenosis, the artery may be partially or completely occluded (blocked). What is carotid stenosis? Carotid stenosis, or carotid artery disease, is a narrowing or blockage of the carotid arteries. Located in the side of your neck, your left and right carotids are two large arteries that carry oxygen-rich blood to your brain. You can feel your carotids pulsate when you place your index finger right below the angle of your jaw. Carotid stenosis is dangerous because it can decrease blood flow to your brain. If blood flow to your brain is interrupted, you can have a stroke. About 800,000 Americans have strokes every year. Keyword: arterial stenosis; carotid stenosis; definition stenosis; spinal column

I have been diagnosed with carotid artery stenosis of less than .50 percent. What does this mean.
This means the diameter of your carotid artery has reduced 50% percent, this will compromise the blood supply to your brain.Did this happen to both sides? Usually, patients with atherosclerosis and vascular disease such as Takayasu arteritis or giant cell arteritis will present stenotic arteries. But atherosclerosis is the most common one. Have you tested your lipid level? if it is high, you should take Atorvastatin, which not only can lower lipid level but also stablize the atherosclerosis plaque in the artery, which decrease the event of thrombosis.
But if your lipid level is ok, you need to find other causes such as giant cell arteritis. The inflammation of vascular wall support the existence of vasculitis.
