Clostridium botulinum. Also called C. botulinum, they are rod-shaped. The bacteria live and grow in low oxygen conditions. When survival conditions are poor, the bacteria form protective spores. Then the spore encases the key parts of the bacterium and forms layers of protective membranes. As a result, the dormant bacterium is able to survive for years. C. botulinum is responsible for botulism. The bacteria release a neurotoxin, which is a poison that attacks your nervous system.   Keywords: bacteria botulism, bacteria that causes botulism, botulism bacteria
