Chronic migraines can be treated by the same drugs that are used to treat migraine. They include medications that treat the pain and other symptoms as well as drugs that treat the underlying cause of migraine. There are three types of medications:
- Drugs that relieve pain or other symptoms of migraines
- Drugs that stop a migraine headache (abortive drugs): Take these drugs at the first sign of a migraine attack to stop them. They prevent common symptoms like pain, nausea, and sound and light sensitivity.
- Drugs that prevent your headaches: Take these drugs regularly to keep migraines attacks from happening. They lessen the number and severity of your headaches.
Make sure to take the drugs based on your condition and follow the instruction of your doctor.
