It hasn’t been proved for sure.
Vitiligo occurs when pigment-producing cells die or stop producing melanin — the pigment that gives your skin, hair and eyes color. As a result, the involved patches of skin become lighter or white.
However, doctors don't know why the cells fail or die. But it may be related to:
- A disorder occurs when your immune system attacks and destroys the melanocytes in the skin
- Family history. It may run in families.
- A trigger event, such as sunburn, stress or exposure to industrial chemicals
Besides, in most cases, it develops early in life, between ages 10 and 30.
In a word, whether the condition has something to do with the autoimmune system still needs more evidence.
