It is still unknown why people get narcolepsy. Most people with narcolepsy have low levels of the chemical hypocretin (hi-poe-KREE-tin), which is an important neurochemical in your brain that helps regulate wakefulness and REM sleep.
It is also found that there are abnormalities in various parts of the brain involved in regulating REM sleep. These abnormalities apparently contribute to symptom development. Narcolepsy possibly involves multiple factors that interact to cause neurological dysfunction and REM sleep disturbances according to experts.
