Where and how bad the brain damage by an injury or a disease is and what caused it determine the degree of disability. Causes A stroke is the most common cause of aphasia. Stroke damages brain by blocking and rupturing a blood vessel in the brain which results in the loss of blood to the brain. The brain cell that control language will be damaged or die due to this. A severe head injury, a tumor, an infection, some disease, or a degenerative process can cause aphasia. In such cases, cognitive problems, such as memory problems or confusion may occur.
