About 10-15% of people aged 65 and older experience an anxiety disorder. Older adults who suffer from physical illness are more likely to develop anxiety.
Although it's difficult to identify anxiety disorders, given they are the increased version of normal worries, there are still ways to find out. Older adults with anxiety are more likely to show shortness of breath and chest pain, so you should be careful when they report such symptoms. They may skip meals or overeat. They tend to stay at home rather than go out and meet people. Their hobbies may become less enjoyable.
Being accompanied by a caring family member, friend or social worker can be helpful. Older adults can also ease anxiety through psychotherapies.
