In fact, the real causes of gallstones are unclear. However, scientists and doctors have some theories. Here are some of them.
Gallstones may form if
your bile has too much cholesterol. When the balance is maintained, your bile has enough chemicals to dissolve the cholesterol. But when your bile has too much cholesterol that the chemicals cannot dissolve it all, the extra cholesterol may become stones.
The second theory is that
your bile contains too much bilirubin. Excessive bilirubin can lead to gallstones.
It may also be that
your gallbladder fails to empty often enough or completely. When that happens, your bile may become concentrated, thus causing the formation of gallstones.
Scientists and doctors have found some
risk factors. They include:
- Being pregnant
- Losing weight quickly
- Being sedentary
- Being female
- Being overweight or obese
- Having diabetes
- Having a family history of gallstones
