There are two major types of narcolepsy:
- Narcolepsy with cataplexy. Cataplexy is a condition that leads to weakness and loss of muscle control. It's usually triggered by strong emotions.
- Narcolepsy without cataplexy. People who have narcolepsy without cataplexy have sleepiness but no emotionally triggered muscle weakness, and generally have less severe symptoms.
There is also another rare type of narcolepsy called secondary narcolepsy
. It occurs with injury to a deep part of the brain called the hypothalamus
. People with secondary narcolepsy also have severe neurological problems and require large amounts of sleep.
