Gallstones are solid particles that develop from bilirubin and bile cholesterol in the gallbladder. It's necessary for people who suspect they have them to know the symptoms and treatments.
When there's no symptom, gallstones don't require treatment. Symptoms
usually occur when there are complications. They include:
- Pain in abdomen
- Yellowing of the skin
- Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL). Doctors use it to generate shock waves to blast gallstones into small pieces.
- Dissolving stones. Your doctor may prescribe drugs made of bile acids which can help dissolve gallstones.
- Surgery. Those who have complicated gallstones need surgery to remove the gallbladder. The surgery is called cholecystectomy.
