In order to diagnose a IBS, your doctor may ask about your complete medical history, let you have phsical exam and tests to rule out other conditions.
Rome criteria and Manning criteria are two type of diagnostic criteria for IBS. If you have other signs or symptoms that might suggest another, more serious, condition, you'll likely need additional tests including:
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy.
- X-ray or CT scan.
You may also have these laboratory tests:
- Lactose intolerance tests.
- Breath test for bacterial overgrowth.
- Upper endoscopy.
- Stool tests.
