The main causes of arterial thrombosis include:
- Hypercoagulability. It is caused by genetic deficiencies or autoimmune disorders.
- Endothelial cell injury. Trauma, surgery, infection or turbulent flow at bifurcations can cause injury to the vessel's wall.
- Disturbed blood flow. Stagnation of blood flow past the point of injury, venous stasis which may occur in heart failure, in or after long periods of sedentary behavior, such as sitting on a long airplane flight.
