Magnetic therapy for depression is also called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS. It uses magnetic fields which are sent through the brain to stimulate the release of serotonin.
This therapy passes magnetic pulses through the person’s brain. Then, the brain sends an electric current throughout it. Unlike electro therapy that can be dramatic and induces a seizure on the patient, magnetic therapy doesn't even require sedation. And it causes no major side effects.
The therapy is a good choice for people who are not responding to antidepressants or for those who have severe side effects towards prescription drugs.
Possible side effects include auditory issues, lightheadedness, and muscle twitches.
The machine used for the therapy has been approved by the FDA. But the treatment itself has not been approved yet.
