Overview

An inhaler is a device holding a medicine that you take by breathing in (inhaling). And inhalers are the main treatment for asthma. You get the drugs faster - and with fewer side effects - than you would if you took it by pill or IV. Besides, asthma inhalers can deliver drugs in a variety of ways. For example:
  • Hydrofluoroalkane inhalers or HFAs (formerly called meter does inhalers) provide the drug through a small, handheld aerosol canister.
  • Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) require you to breathe in quickly and deeply.
  • Nebulizers deliver medication through a mouthpiece or mask.
Last but not least, read the instructions before you use an asthma inhaler.   Keywords: asthma inhaler; asthma inhaler overview.
