There is no way that one single test can diagnose dyslexia. Your doctor has to consider a number of factors to determine whether you have dyslexia. Things the doctor needs to consider:
  • The patient's medical history, development and educational issues. This includes asking whether the patient has a family member who lives with a learning disability.
  • Questionnaires. The doctor may ask the patient, family members or teachers to finish questionnaires.
  • Home life. It's likely that the doctor will ask the patient to describe their family life.
  • Psychological testing. This is intended to find out whether anxiety, depression or social problems contributed to the condition.
  • Hearing, vision and brain tests. It's used to see if another condition is adding to the patient's poor reading ability.
