A bronchopleural fistula refers to a fistula between the pleural space and the lung. Many conditions can cause the development of the bronchopleural fistula, such as pneumonectomy, post traumatically, or certain infection. Besides, it can also lead to bronchopleural fistula when the large airways are in communication with the pleural space following a large pneumothorax or other loss of pleural negative pressure, especially during positive pressure mechanical ventilation.
