Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a virus that causes infections in the lungs and respiratory tract. It is contagious and spreads quickly. SRV is very common in children but also infects adults. Your doctor may suspect RSV through physical exam, such as ask you when the symptoms start to appear and listen to the lungs with a stethoscope. You may also be required to do some laboratory and imaging tests.

These tests can help diagnose RSV, including:

  • Chest X-rays (check lung inflammation).
  • Swab of secretions from inside the mouth or nose (check signs of the virus).
  • Blood tests (check white cell counts or viruses, bacteria and other germs).
  • Using pulse oximetry (detect the oxygen in the blood).
