Arterial embolism is one of the major types of embolism. It is a sudden interruption of blood flow to an organ or body part because of an embolus adhering to the wall of an artery. Depending on the size of the embolus and how much it blocks the blood flow, symptoms may occur quickly or slowly. The common symptoms of arterial embolism include pain in the involved body part, chest pain, dyspnea, diaphoresis, nausea, palpitations. Atherosclerosis in the aorta and other large blood vessels is a common risk factor, so the risk factors for atherosclerosis are risk factors for arterial embolism as well, which include: cigarette smoking, hypertension, obesity, hyperlipidemia, stress, sedentary lifestyle and so on.
