Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition that the blood clot forms in a vein. VTE can form anywhere in your body and blocks blood flow. VTE which forms in the deep veins in the legs, thighs, pelvis, or arms is called a deep venous thrombosis (DVT). There are several risk factors that may increase the risks for VTE, they are:
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Medical conditions, like obesity or cancer
  • Smoking
  • Recent surgery
  • Prolonged bed time
  • Family history of VTE
  • Clotting disorder
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Birth control pills
