What is fatal familial insomnia (FFI)?

1 Answer

FFI is a rare sleep disorder. It is inherited, and can lead to death. It is an autosomal dominant inherited disease. The main sign and symptom is insomnia. However, it can also cause other symptoms, such as fever, muscle stiffness and dementia, because the disease affects the thalamus. In most cases, it causes death in a year or two after symptoms occur, but the situation differs from person to person. There is no cure for the disease yet. Some treatments can help relieve symptoms temporarily. Key word: fatal familial insomnia; fatal familial insomnia+; fatal_familial_insomnia
