What is thoracic aortic aneurysm?

The aorta is a vital blood vessel of the body. Aneurysm occurring in the upper part of the aorta is known as thoracic aortic aneurysm. An aneurysm is appeared because of the weakening of vessel wall, and the larger and faster-growing aneurysms are at a risk for rupture.

Causes.

The exact cause of thoracic aortic aneurysm is not known, but what factors may develop an aneurysm include:
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Connective tissue disorders
  • Problems with heart valves
  • Infections
  • Trauma or injury

Symptoms.

Thoracic aortic aneurysms often grow slowly and usually without symptoms, so they are difficult to detect. Some aneurysms will never rupture, but when some aneurysms grow people may notice:
  • Chest pain
  • Back pain
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
