A STEMI or ST-elevation myocardial infarction is caused by a sudden complete blockage of a coronary artery, however a non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) is caused by the partial or almost full blockage of a coronary artery.
With occluded or blocked coronary artery, the heart muscle becomes deficient in blood and oxygen supply, thus leading to cell injury and potential death. STEMI and NSTEMI are two general types of myocardial infarction, and can be distinguished from each other from laboratory results.
