What is the definition of adult mononucleosis?
Mononucleosis in adults is a contagious disease sometimes called mono
or kissing disease
. While you can get the virus by kissing, you can also get sick for other reasons, such as sharing drinks. It's contagious, so you get mononucleosis as easily as you get a cold.
is not usually a serious disease, but it can lead to complications and, in some cases, make the disease more dangerous.
Symptoms of the disease can be mild but can become very severe. If this happens, you may not be able to participate in normal daily activities for several weeks.
Mononucleosis symptoms may include:
- sore throat: may be misdiagnosed as strep throat
- spleen enlargement
The incubation period is about four to six weeks
, and the incubation period for young children
may be even shorter. Symptoms such as fever
and sore throat are usually relieved within a few weeks, but fatigue, swollen lymph nodes and enlarged spleen can last for weeks.
How it causes and spreads?
EBV spreads through body fluids.
The most common form of transmission is through saliva, which is why it's also called kissing disease. If you share food, drink with someone infected, or if someone infected coughs or sneezes near you, you can get infected too. As long as what an infected person uses - like a fork or spoon - is still moist, the virus may still exist and be contagious. The virus can also be transmitted through blood and semen.
