What is supraventricular tachycardia?

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is an arrhythmia or rapid heartbeat. A normal heartbeat is caused by an electrical pulse that travels through the heart.

Causes.

Most of the time, there's no obvious reason why SVT happens. It usually starts in your teens or early twenties. Scar tissue may also form defective circuits after surgery. Drink lots of caffeine or alcohol; under a lot of stress can lead to SVT as well.

Symptoms.

When your heart beats too fast, it can't pump enough blood into your body. May lead to:
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath

Treatments.

A common treatment is to use drugs to slow a patient's heart. If that doesn't solve your problem, the alternative is ablation. Through surgery the surgeon destroys the pathway that causes the abnormality.
