Esophageal spasms are abnormal contractions of the muscles in the esophagus (food pipe). It is still not clear what causes esophageal spasms. image However, some risk factors may increase the chances of esophageal spasms:
  • Old age (over 60)
  • Patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
  • High blood pressure
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Drinking too much red wine
  • Consuming very hot or very cold foods or drinks

If esophageal spasms make it difficult to eat or drink, please go to see your doctor and receive proper treatments.

When did you have the neck surgery? Is there any complication or nerve injury? You might need to get used to this nasogastric way though it is not comfortable. You need to ask the surgeon who did the surgery for the cause and solve it.
Although diltiazem is for blood pressure issues,it is also used to control esophageal spasms. It helped me, maybe it will help you.
