Mastitis: it is common in the postpartum lactation and the primipara would suffer most from it. Clinical Manifestations: distending pain in the breast with tender mass but without red skin; perhaps accompanied by irritability; bitter taste and poor appetite; burning and painful mammary mass; fever, aversion to cold; dry mouth and tongue, constipation. Therapeutic method: soothing the liver to regulate the flow of Qi, relieving swelling to dredge the collaterals. Manipulations: you need ask your family member or friend to help you. (they would be the “operator” below). You should take the supine position, and the operator (female would be better) should sit at your affected side. Massaging rapidly and moderately around the mass for 5 minutes and undertake gently pinching and rotating around the mass with the thumbs. Massaging the points--- Rugen (ST 18), Ruzhong (ST 17) and Qimen (LR 14) for 1 minute each. Next, you need take the sitting position, and the operator should sit in front of you. Pinching and squeezing toward the nipple lightly and tenderly for 2 minutes with the thumb and index finger of the right hand, expelling the stagnated milk until yellowish milk is seen. Then, you need take the prone position, and the operator need stand beside you. Massaging on each of Ganshu (BL 18), Pishu (BL 20) and Weishu (BL 21) for 1 minute. Treatment Course: Treatment is given once daily, and 3 times of treatment make 1 course. Attention: the massage only suit for the initial stage of this disease.
