Schatzki ring is a smooth and narrow ring of the lower part of your esophagus that can cause dysphagia ( difficulty in swallowing ). Schatzki ring was first defined by the German-American radiologist Robert Schatzki and divided into two types, A and B:
  • Type A rings are rarely associated with any symptoms and above your esophagus.
  • Type B rings are mucosal rings in your lower esophagus and usually cause intermitten dysphagia .
Cause Doctors still don’t clearly understand the cause of Schatzki rings, but gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a possible cause. Symptoms Most of these rings don’t cause any symptoms. If there are any symptoms, they would be:
  • Severe chest pain
  • Heartburn
  • Difficulty swallowing
