Pertussis is a highly contagious airway infection which mostly affects children. Once developing pertussis, people may experience the symptoms for several months or years. Pertussis is usually caused by bacteria Bordetella pertussis, and its symptoms resemble those of a common cold or flu in the initial stage, such as runny nose, nasal congestion, red and watery eyes, cough, and low-graded fever. As pertussis progresses, it may present symptoms like persistent cough with high-pitched intake of breath, vomiting and extreme tiredness. In order to prevent pertussis, there are several things you can do:
  • Take prescribed antibiotics: Common antibiotics prescribed for pertussis are Erythromycin, Clarithromycin, Doxycycline, Azithromycin. They are used for killing bacteria.
  • Remain at home: It is conducted to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Use tissues to cover mouth and nose when coughing
  • Wash hands regularly
  • Get plenty of rest
