Definition of Pleurisy and Pericarditis: Pleurisy is inflammation of your pleura which is a membrane consisting of a layer of tissue that lines the inner side of the chest cavity and a layer of tissue that surrounds the lungs. Pericarditis is swelling and irritation of the pericardium, the thin saclike membrane surrounding your heart. Both pleurisy and pericarditis are inflammation, but they affect different parts of human body, which are pleura and heart. Symptoms of Pleurisy and Pericarditis: Pleurisy and Pericarditis share some symptoms, such as:
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • fever
Besides, people with pericarditis may have other symptoms, including:
  • Heart palpitations
  • An overall sense of weakness, fatigue or feeling sick
  • Abdominal or leg swelling
Treatment for Pleurisy and Pericarditis: Patients with pleurisy are usually prescribed an anti-inflammatory drug like Motrin or stronger medicine, such as codeine, while patients with pericarditis often choose the following medicine:
  • Pain relievers (such as aspirin or ibuprofen)
  • Colchicine (reduce inflammation)
