Devic's disease is an inflammatory condition that affects the protective covering of spinal cord and optic nerves. We can also call it neuromyelitis optica (NMO). The condition is extremely rare, affecting between 0.052 and 0.44 in every 100,000 people worldwide. The disease is more common in people over 40 years of age. Symptoms Signs and symptoms of NMO vary. A person with NMO will experience at least one bout of inflammation, including:
  • temporary loss of eyesight affecting at least one eye
  • swelling of the optic disc
  • pain in the eye that generally gets worse with movement, and tends to become more severe after a week
  • reduced sensitivity to color
Diagnosis Your doctor will perform a thorough evaluation to distinguishing NMO from multiple sclerosis and other conditions, including:
  • Neurological examination
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Blood tests.
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Stimuli response test
Treatment There is no cure for NMO. However, there are treatments that can help some of the symptoms:
  • Steroids
  • Plasma exchange therapy, or plasmapheresis
  • Preventing relapses
