Thyroid nodules are lumps that form within your thyroid. It is one of the most common complaints among U.S. patients. Most of them are not serious and don't cause symptoms. However, in some cases, the thyroid nodules may grow large enough to be felt and seen. It often looks like a swelling at the base of the neck. Large thyroid nodules may cause increased perspiration and irregular heartbeat.

 The good thing is, few of them are cancerous. That is to say, few thyroid nodules develop into thyroid cancer. However, the possibility still exists, and you should anyway be cautious.

How to spot thyroid nodules?

Usually, you don’t know that you have them unless you have a medical check-up.  Your doctor may discover it in a routine medical exam. In fact, it often looks like a swelling at the base of the neck. Also, if you press on your windpipe or esophagus, you may feel breathless or have difficulty in swallowing.

What are the signs: irregular heartbeat, increased perspiration and more.

Most thyroid nodules don't cause any sign at all. However, when they become large enough to be seen, they may cause the following symptoms:

  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat;
  • Sudden weight loss;
  • Increased perspiration;
  • Nervousness;
  • Irritability;
  • Tremor.

Most of them are noncancerous, but a few of them are malignant. However, you can’t determine which nodules are malignant by their symptoms alone. Cancerous nodules often can’t be discovered in early stage, for they are small then and grow slowly. A few people may have aggressive thyroid cancer, but this number is usually quite small. Nodules in this condition are usually firm, large, immobile and they can develop rapidly. When you find yourself with thyroid cancer resulting from cancerous nodules, don't worry. Doctors can remove such nodules afterwards.   Keywords: nodules thyroid; thyroid nodules     Related FAQs: http://healthtopquestions.com/?p=5432   http://healthtopquestions.com/?p=5364   http://healthtopquestions.com/?p=5374

A thyroid nodule may cause no sign at all in early stage. When it grows to a large size, it might be visible from outside, like a lump. That's why screening through ultrasound is recommended.
