Although scarlet fever is most common in children 5 to 15 years of age, adults can be affected too. The signs and symptoms of the disease in adults are similar to those in children. These symptoms include:

  • Appearance of red rashes
  • Formation of red lines
  • Flushed face
  • Strawberry tongue
  • Fever of 101 F (38.3 C) or higher, often with chills
  • Soreness and redness of the throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache 
  • Enlarged neck glands
