Rectal discharge is intermittent or continuous expression of liquid from the anus (per rectum). Normal rectal mucus is needed for proper excretion of waste. Otherwise, this is closely related to types of fecal incontinence (e.g. fecal leakage) but the term rectal discharge does not necessarily imply degrees of incontinence.

While mucus in the digestive system helps move along feces to its final destination, visible anal mucus discharge is abnormal. This could be due to an infection.

Associated symptoms of mucus discharge may include the following:

  • Visible mucus with or without having a bowel movement
  • Blood mixed with the mucus
  • Diarrhea that may be watery or bloody
  • Pruritis: This is itching around the area of the anus.
  • Pain or discomfort in the area of the anus
  • Abdominal pain that may be severe
  • Constipation
  • Fever or chills
  • Nausea or vomiting

You should seek care promptly if you experience persistent or worsening diarrhea, abdominal pain, or discharge. A physician can determine the cause and the best course of treatment.

I once experienced rectal mucus discharge. That's terrible! About 4 months ago, I found clots of blood in my stool and there were mucus mixed. I had no choice but to see a doctor. I was diagnosed with colitis. Vomiting, diarrhea,reflux... all of these symptoms last for about one weeks. I took asacol (2 pill 3x per day) and I think this medication works well for me. I know medition cannot cure colitis, so I go on a special diet to avoid drinking milk, eating seafood some kinds of fruits.
So it is not diarrhea? What is the color of the mucus? Is it bloody or clean? Is it foul-smelling? How did this happen? See a gastroenterologist.
The mucus is clear and yes it is foul smelling
mucus bloody discharge one day and end
Do you have hemorrhoids? If the color of the discharge is bloody, then it suggests the bleeding site is near the rectum. The most common cause for this is hemorrhoids, as most people have hemorrhoids. It generally does not need treatment. The most feaered thing is that colon/rectal cancer, as it would also cause mucus blood discharge and may be misdiagnosed as hemorrhoids. Thus if you are middle-aged or above, a colonoscopy may be recommended.
